How To Train Your Bear to Heel
What technique did the European Gypsies use to make sure their bear doesn’t pull on a leash?
Just think how powerful a dog is when it decides to walk his master, and now make that times 100 pulling power.
Gypsies needed a reliable way of making sure the bear doesn’t even think of pulling.
No, the leash alone didn’t do the trick. To read previous articles in How To Train a Bear series, see

So, how did the European Gypsies train their bears to heel?
I’m afraid this one is not pretty at all (as if the previous posts were?)
They would drill a hole in the bear’s face and pull a rope through it. The wound would heal around the rope but any tension on the rope would cause the bear some major discomfort.
So it was in bear’s best interest to keep slack on the rope.
Sorry if this wasn’t a revelation you hoped it would be. Perhaps you thought I would share a technique you could apply to your dog. I’m afraid that your dog will continue to pull on a leash and this particular “training” technique is probably not appropriate for your dog. Sorry.
I hope you enjoyed my How To Train a Bear series.
